Pre-Reading Milestones for Birth to 5 Months
- Turns head toward things that touch his cheek (rooting reflex).
- Grasps your finger with his hand (grasping reflex).
- Begins to coordinate movements of her arms and legs – reaches toward an object, grabs own foot.
- When placed on her stomach, wiggles arms and legs and tries to lift head.
- Smiles or becomes quiet when you talk or sing.
- Shows pleasure by cooing or laughing.
- Visually tracks a moving object.
- Starts to repeat sounds like ee-ee-ee or oo-oo-oo.
- Talk and sing with your baby every day – your baby listens and learns the tones, sounds and words of your language from the very beginning.
- Use daily routines, such as bath time, diaper changes or feeding time, to talk, sing and play with your baby.
- Be attentive and respond to your baby by looking at her face, making eye contact, imitating expressions and copying her sounds.
- Provide daily “tummy time” to help build muscle tone and coordination.
- Does not respond to sounds.
- Does not seem responsive to you.
- Does not gain weight steadily.
